Privacy in plain English
FamilySlate does not require a user account or subscription. It does store the household information you choose to add so that paired devices can share it. This notice describes the current beta service and will be reviewed before a wider public launch.
Who is responsible for the data?
The FamilySlate beta is operated by the owner of familyslate.co.uk. During the beta, privacy questions and data requests can be sent through the FamilySlate feedback form. Select “Privacy / data question”.
What FamilySlate stores
- Household setup information and shared content you enter: manually added calendar events, calendar feed addresses, shopping items, tasks, countdowns/birthdays, saved links, recipes, meal plans, star-chart information, photo albums and uploaded photos.
- Device and security information needed for pairing, such as device names, hashed credentials, pairing invitation records and last-seen timestamps. The usable device credential is stored locally on the paired device; the server stores a one-way hash.
- Local display preferences on each device, such as colour scheme and which modules that device shows.
- If you send beta feedback: the message, optional contact email, and—only if you leave diagnostics enabled—basic browser/device details such as FamilySlate version, browser user-agent, platform, screen size and online status.
How information is used
Information is used to provide and sync FamilySlate, secure household access, fetch user-selected services such as weather/calendar feeds, process optional recipe imports, diagnose beta problems and improve the product. FamilySlate does not sell household data.
Other services involved
- Cloudflare hosts the Worker application, D1 database and private R2 photo storage. Optional recipe-reading features use Cloudflare Workers AI.
- postcodes.io is contacted when you choose UK postcode weather lookup. The postcode is used to obtain coordinates.
- Open-Meteo receives the coordinates required to return the weather forecast.
- Your calendar/feed provider is contacted when FamilySlate fetches a calendar feed you have configured.
- Google Fonts currently supplies the Nunito Sans web font used by the interface, so the browser may make a request to Google’s font service when loading the app online.
Third-party services have their own privacy terms. FamilySlate sends only the information required for the requested feature.
Security
Households are separated by private credentials. New devices require a single-use pairing invitation and 6-digit PIN. Each paired device then receives its own revocable credential. Stored server credentials are hashed, and household photos are served only after household authentication.
No security system can guarantee absolute protection. Keep pairing invitations and PINs private and remove devices you no longer control.
Cookies, local storage and analytics
FamilySlate does not currently use third-party advertising or behavioural analytics trackers. It uses browser local storage, caching and service-worker storage because these are necessary for device settings, pairing state, PWA installation and offline operation. The sponsor area in the beta is only a placeholder.
How long information is kept
Household content is kept until you delete individual items or use Settings → Delete this FamilySlate permanently. Revoked/expired security records may be retained for a limited period for security and troubleshooting. Beta feedback is retained while it is useful for resolving and reviewing beta issues, then removed when no longer needed.
Your choices and rights
You can edit or delete most household content directly in FamilySlate, disconnect individual devices, revoke old links and permanently delete the household. Depending on applicable UK data-protection law, you may also have rights to ask for access, correction, deletion, restriction or objection and to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

Children’s information
FamilySlate can be used for family birthdays, chores and photos. Household members should only add information about children that they are comfortable making available to the other paired devices in that household, and should avoid adding unnecessary sensitive information.
